So… I’m not well right now. I have medical leave through to April 20, and back-dated to Jan 9. Basically, I have a range of interesting things going wrong at once

On the first two of three blood tests for the year, I have elevated ANA readings, which is why I have a third batch of tests and now have a specialist.

general fatigue, well outside even my tolerance levels of exhausted for working too damn much.

recurring pain. I have the stupidly high pain threshold of doom, and I hurt, a lot, and consistently.

Pain through the feet, ankles, shins, knees and thighs that is disconnected from any exercise levels – pain occurs with or without exercise, but tends not to recur during exercise as much as non-exercise.

Stress. Y’all seen me deal with stupid levels of stress without blinking. Well, I’m not dealing so well with the medical uncertainty stress.

A couple of skin conditions

I was being treated for a wrist injury over Christmas (turns out lack of use rather than overuse. Insert ironic joke here). At that time, I had a couple of preliminary checks done for other problems (leg pain, foot pain). That led to a pair of blood tests which came back with 1 of 19 symptoms out of the ordinary, which led to being sent to a rheumatology specialist for possible arthritis or related. They had incomplete data, so another battery of tests took place, and are still underway. Since I’ve had so much fun this season, I’ve added an asthma check to the list plus I still have the X-ray of the legs, and an echocardiogram to go, all before returning to my specialist on April 20.

It’s possible that I just am paying the long over due bills on my lifestyle, or that I’ve finally gotten too old for this, or that I’ve been lucky and by coincidence happened to stumble onto an early onset of something, or my ludicrous pain tolerance means that I have stress fractures that I never noticed. About the only thing to have been ruled out thus far is lupus (maybe). Frankly, we can speculate, but it does seriously range from broken bones through to kidney problems, autoimmune diseases, early onset arthritis, oesto

I suspect I’m out of warranty.

As a consequence of all hell breaking loose in my body, I’m taking time off work, postponing projects, and cancelling anything cancellable – between now and April 20, I am not opening my work mail, nor am I actively doing anything that’s not exercise/fitness training related or Xbox360 related.

I think it’s called a holiday.

We no longer ‘market’ much in the same way we don’t medicine or physics or chemistry? We don’t maths an equation, we solve maths equations. So instead of saying “We’ll market this to the customer”, we actually talk specifics of pricing it, promoting it, distributing it and making worth the customer’s attention and money

It’d change a few things now wouldn’t it?

100-81: One of the big songs of 2011 gets knocked out early, thus sparking a twitter storm of outrage at how this song could be eliminated so soon…which was the point of the song getting knocked out. Options include Pumped Up Kicks, something by Skrillex, or the popular Kayne track

80-61: First of the Triple Play “Oh my god, will they get to 5 songs in the countdown?”. They won’t, but the fourth song won’t appear until the Top 20

60-41: Wolfmother or nearest offer. Three dubstep tracks, so there’s plenty of time for people to complain that modern music sounds like noise. One track made famous because a much more interesting cover of it sung by a young woman dressed in 1920s outfits with a ukulele did the YouTube rounds. Adele appears (Rolling in the Deep), and everyone complains that one of the other songs from the album totally should have been there.

First mention of Amy Winehouse.

40-21: Richard Kingsmill admits the whole thing is fixed, and we all shuffle nervously. Several bands from Melbourne that people sort of vaguely know, and two TripleJ unearthed winners appear.

20-10: Songs that legitimately won Top 10 placings but who aren’t in the spirit of the music direction of 2012 Triple J. This are the tracks that will get you to cough up for the Triple J Hottest 100 CD (despite your resolve to never buy it again after last year)

Second Amy Winehouse mention.

9: That indistinguishably similar Australian hiphop sound which wasn’t the popular one

8: Something stonerish and so painfully slow, that Wolfmother seems preferable.

6 or 7: A band nobody in the room recognises. Everyone feels that little bit older. Somebody makes a “Get orf my lawn comment and means it”

5: The last electronic song of the count down. The drum and bass members of the party realise they can go home, but they’re giving a lift to the guitar band fan so they have to stick around.

4: Guitars, three piece, drummer and gimmick.

3: A band being given the TripleJ push. Critically acclaimed, and no discernable record sales.

2: The actual winner, with iTunes sales and CD purchases included.

1: Goyte. Something really slow, downbeat and depressing so the entire TripleJ nation feels bad about themselves for not knowing/liking/knowing the band before it was popular.

0: Everyone gets out their copy of Rockband/Guitar Hero. Much Pearl Jam is played across the nation.

Think about it. A starship captained by Janeway, with co-pilot Leia Organa. The Blockade Voyager will be fast, small, and immensely in need of upgrade and repairs as Engineer Kaylee Frye tapes back together what the Borg and Empire just tried to blast apart. Heading up the rest of the onboard crew is First Officer Eleanor Ripley as the away team leader, and primary mecha pilot. No surface going exploration of anywhere doesn’t start with a flamethrower, minigun and grenade launcher being loaded onto the back of a powerlifter (it’s the only way to be sure). Diplomacy is negotiable, but if it needs to burn, explode or be pulverized, Ripley has the hardware at hand (just in case).

Ensuring that where they go contains trouble most identifiable is the combined team of Science Officer Donna Noble and Magic Officer Hermoine Granger. What ever the universe has, they’ll be able to spot it, catalogue it, and determine whether it’s run, befriend or shoot time. (Or which combination is best suited). For shipwise security, the corridors, ducts and ceilings are checked by Operational Security (<strike>Deputy Chief of Violence</strike>) River Tam.

On the flight deck, alongside pilot Kara “Starbuck” Thrace is Ensign Bella Swan who was rescued from a planet load of glow in the dark sparkling undead creatures. Swan and Thrace have a ragtag collection of mostly borrowed small craft in the hangar bay, depending on what they broke last week, and what wasn’t locked at the last starport they visited.

Rounding out the show is their go-to officer, Major Kira Nerys, who usually knows where to find them work, or at the very least, someone and something that deserves a considerable ass-kicking.

This includes where I teach a combined undergrad/postgrad class (eg MKTG3024/MKTG7024 Social marketing) since I have a tendency to score the combined classes as a single, or the postgrad/undergrad as equivalent (even though they run separate sessions, different assessment etc). Basically, even with my discounting of subjects that are close enough to be considered the same (even when I had a case with e-Marketing that I never used the same book twice, or repeated any of the notes from the previous year, it still counts as one subject), I end up with 21 subjects

I have taught social marketing more times than any other subject – 10 versions of it over my carrer. It was my first subject I solo lectured, and to date, has been my highest scoring subject (4.5/5.0). It’s also been the most controversial (attracting an MA15+ label), and probably the most radical departure from classic marketing subjects you’ll ever find. I’ve taught and written about e-marketing / e-commerce issues more than anything else combined. Probably should try and get my e-marketing subject up and running… after I teach Marketing Research (subject #22) in Semester 2 2012.

In one of the lectures, I promised a bonus of 2 marks to any paper that worked the words “Friendship is Magic” into the assignment. The Marking Criteria had a popup box of options, but I ended up using a mail merge with Achievement Unlocked messages, so I wanted to at least have some record of the magic unused marks criteria for this season

Popup Criteria

No

Yes, +2 Marks and a Fluttershy yay!

This assignment is 20% cooler +2 marks

Spike, take a scroll. This paper is +2 marks

Brony pride! +2

Pegasister pride! +2

Yes, these additional items are for you +2

Rarity endorsed. +2

Apple Jack approved +2

Bonus trombone routine! +2 marks

Banished to Moon. Gain 2 marks.

Resist Celestia! +2 marks

These were replaced with the “Achievement Unlocked” Messages

Achievement Unlocked: Courage of Convictions. Reasoned, reasonable and courageous case made to lecturer who may well have been unreasonable

Achievement Unlocked: Citation Station. More that 1000 words of end notes, footnotes and textboxes

Achievement unlocked: Comic Sans and Sensibility. Only paper to have used Comic Sans

Achievement unlocked: Footnotoriety: Most footnotes per square inch of text in the assessment

Achievement Unlocked: Friendship is Magic bonus points activated.

Achievement unlocked: Impressive. Most Impressive. I do admire the approach you’ve taken to the topic selection.

Achievement unlocked: My Little Bonus Points (Friendship is magic).

Achievement Unlocked: Tabula Rather – Largest volume of tables in the marketing plans

One year, I will actually have achievements coded into the subject :)

A reminder that West Australia, North Territory and Queensland will remain on Reality Based Time (what is generally agree to be called Standard Time), whilst New South Wales, Victoria, Tasmania, ACT and South Australia will move to Fantasy Time (Daylight Savings Time).

A further reminder that Standard Reality Time also has WA at UTC +8, NT +9.30 and Queensland +10 which we can all cope with quite well during the year, until the NSW/ACT/VIC crowd suddenly lose their grip and claim not to be able to calculate time zone differences with Queensland. It’s is a bit unfortunate that seems to happen around the same time as Fantasy Time takes effect, but then again, if you have to believe in a fantasy involving saving daylight, I guess it helps not to have to confront reality on a regular basis.

A final reminder that if you hear our favorite piece of Fantasy Time Trolling “but the curtains will fade”, and you take it seriously, and you get frustrated and riled up, well, sorry, but maybe if you weren’t so convinced of the magical nature of your clock setting shift, you might notice we’re mocking you. Probably not though, because the mystical woo seems very strong amongst the Fantasy Time followers.
